Slaves: Before & After
During and after reconstruction, former slaves were still basically slaves with a little more freedom. Before reconstruction they had no freedom and had to work in plantation for the landowner, and also had to do everything they were told to do, without complaining. But, now after reconstruction they had their daily freedom to be with their families, so basically they were better off after the Civil War. Even though they had their daily freedom they also had to work on farming crops to pay off the land they were given. Former slaves had to give the landowner fifty percent of their crops for land, and then out of their half of crops, they had to feed their family or team and sell the rest, and from the profit made by the sold crops they had to pay the landowner for the farming tools they were supplied with. So either way, before or after the Civil War, they still ended up working for the landowner and had someone in charge of them, but still had more advantages after the reconstruction!
